For twenty-five years, the rules of being found online were simple. Write good content, get backlinks, rank on Google, win the click. An entire global industry β€” search engine optimization, or SEO β€” was built on that single premise. This year, the premise broke.

Gartner now estimates that by the end of 2026, a quarter of all organic search traffic will shift away from traditional search results and toward AI chatbots and virtual assistants instead. ChatGPT alone handles over 800 million users every week, most of whom never click through to a website β€” they just get an answer and move on. Microsoft has seen Bing's mobile app downloads jump tenfold since adding AI chat features. The "ten blue links" model that built the modern internet economy is being replaced, in real time, by a model where AI reads the web, decides what is true and useful, and tells you the answer directly.

Get cited by AI engines: your on-page AEO checklist

On-page SEO didn't die. It evolved.

Just like in traditional search, AI bots need to read and understand your content before promoting it. How fast, readable, structured, and chunkable your page is determines whether it gets cited or gets ignored.

Our On-Page AEO Checklist is the comprehensive framework for earning citations, built around the four pillars you control: content, technical health, crawlability, and authority.

Inside the checklist:

  • The chunking and answerability formatting that AI engines actually extract

  • A bot-by-bot analysis of GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and othersβ€”and what to allow vs. block

  • A cadence of daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly tasks so nothing slips

Your on-page work is the one layer of AI search you control. Make every page count.

What is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content so that AI systems β€” ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot β€” can easily understand it, trust it, and quote it when answering someone's question. It is the successor to SEO. Instead of optimizing to rank in a list of links, you optimize to be the actual answer the AI gives. If your business is the one cited inside ChatGPT's response, you get the customer's trust before they even visit your website β€” sometimes without them visiting at all.

Here is the part almost nobody outside marketing circles has noticed yet: this shift has created a brand new, well-paying skill β€” and most businesses on earth have no idea it exists, let alone how to do it.

Why this is the most underrated income opportunity in AI right now

Every business with a website β€” a dentist, a law firm, a software company, a local bakery β€” currently has zero visibility into whether AI chatbots even mention them. Most have never checked. Fewer still have done anything about it. And the businesses that do get cited by ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews are seeing something remarkable: when a brand appears in an AI-generated answer, click-through rates for that brand actually increase compared to competitors who are not cited. Being the answer builds trust even among people who never click at all.

This is precisely the kind of gap that built fortunes during the early SEO era twenty years ago. Back then, almost nobody understood how Google's ranking algorithm worked, and the few who figured it out early built entire agencies around explaining it to confused business owners. AEO is at that exact stage today β€” except the gap is bigger, because almost no formal training exists yet, and the tools to measure it are brand new.

From idea to shipped tool in 11 minutes.

Type the problem in Slack. Viktor writes the code, deploys to your subdomain, posts the URL, and starts using it on your next request. No specs, no Jira, no kickoff. Founders are running entire companies this way.

What the work actually looks like

You do not need to be a programmer or a data scientist. The skill is closer to being a very specific kind of writer and analyst β€” someone who understands how AI reads a webpage and what makes it trustworthy enough to quote.

One emerging agency model focuses specifically on professional service businesses β€” accounting firms, medical practices, solo attorneys β€” offering them what is described as cost-effective AEO with measurable ROI. That is not a hypothetical business model. It already exists, it is already profitable, and it is being run by people who started less than two years ago.

How to start your own AEO side income β€” this week

01Run the test yourself, for free. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. Ask the kinds of questions a customer would ask about a local business β€” "best dentist in [your city]," "accountant for small business in [your city]." See who gets mentioned. Most of the time, it is nobody, or it is wrong. That gap is your pitch.

02Pick a niche where trust matters most. Healthcare, legal, financial services, and local professional services see the biggest AEO impact, because customers actively use AI to research before they buy. These are also the industries with the budget and the urgency to pay for help.

03Rewrite their content to directly answer real questions. The single highest-leverage tactic: add clear, question-based headers to a business's most important page, followed by a direct 40–60 word answer right at the top. AI engines are built to extract exactly this kind of structure. It takes an afternoon and it is the core of the entire skill.

04Package it as a service, not a favour. "AI visibility audit" or "AI search readiness report" β€” a one-time deliverable that shows a business exactly where they stand, followed by a monthly retainer to maintain and improve it. The pitch is concrete: "Here is what ChatGPT currently says about you. Here is what it should say."

Why the window will not stay open

AEO will not stay a hidden opportunity for long. Major platforms like HubSpot have already launched tools that let any business check its own AI visibility score in minutes, and large agencies are already building dedicated AEO teams. Within twelve to eighteen months, this will be a standard line item in every marketing budget, the same way "social media management" went from a strange new idea in 2010 to a basic expectation by 2015.

That means the advantage, right now, belongs to whoever moves first β€” learns the skill, builds a portfolio of three or four real case studies, and starts offering it before their market even has a name for what they are buying. The tools to measure AI visibility already exist. The businesses that need the work already exist, mostly unaware they need it. The only missing piece is someone willing to connect the two.

Search engines spent twenty-five years training the world to compete for clicks. AI just changed the game to competing for trust β€” measured not in rankings, but in whether the machine believes you are the answer worth giving. The businesses figuring that out today will own their categories for years. The people who help them figure it out are about to be very busy. β–

Anthropic published a global AI pause proposal β€” and its president explained why an IPO is now inevitable

Build Fast With AI Β· June 15, 2026 Β· Anthropic released what it called its most important safety paper of the year on June 4, proposing coordinated global limits on frontier AI development. Separately, president Daniela Amodei said publicly that the scale of compute costs is pushing the company toward a public listing β€” confirming what insiders have suspected since the $965B valuation round.

Anthropic just locked in a $15 billion-a-year compute deal with SpaceX β€” a rival's infrastructure, not its own

June 16, 2026 Β· Anthropic signed a $1.25 billion-per-month compute agreement with SpaceX's Colossus facility, confirming it will not build its own data centers the way OpenAI has with Stargate. Anthropic's strategy: rent compute aggressively rather than own it, even from a competitor's ecosystem.

The US government forced Anthropic's most advanced model offline β€” mid-deployment, with no warning

June 15, 2026 Β· The Department of Commerce issued an export control directive that pulled Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 offline on June 12. Days later, both remain unavailable. Sixteen percent of companies surveyed have no continuity plan if a key AI provider becomes unavailable β€” and this is now a live example of why that matters.

Europe & Asia

Japan's government and three megabanks are getting direct access to Anthropic's AI β€” a national-scale deployment

June 16, 2026 Β· Japan's Finance Minister confirmed the Japanese government and MUFG, SMBC, and Mizuho β€” the country's three largest banks β€” are gaining structured access to Claude. A sign that AI adoption at the national infrastructure level is accelerating well beyond the US and China.

Google's next big model is three weeks late β€” and still nowhere close to shipping

June 16, 2026 Β· Sundar Pichai promised Gemini 3.5 Pro "next month" at Google I/O on May 19. As of June 16, it remains in limited enterprise preview only, with prediction markets now betting on a June 23 or June 30 release. Expected to ship with a 2 million token context window and a "Deep Think" reasoning mode.

A cheaper Chinese model is matching Claude on agentic tasks at a quarter of the price

Build Fast With AI Β· June 6, 2026 Β· Alibaba's Qwen 3.7 Max scores within striking distance of Claude Opus 4.7 on reasoning benchmarks while costing roughly half on input tokens and a quarter on output tokens. For anyone building AI-powered tools or services, the cost of the underlying technology just dropped significantly.
