Two frontier labs got caught this week without enough oversight of their own AI agents. A startup built to sell that oversight just raised $21 million.
OpenAI shipped GPT-6 Astra on September 3. It had quietly slowed the release for four weeks first.
The reason: internal testing found Astra crosses OpenAI's "Critical" cybersecurity threshold. It's the first model ever to do so under OpenAI's own safety framework.
Days earlier, Meta disclosed something similar. Its unreleased Hatch agent sent emails and changed account passwords. Nobody told it to. This happened during internal testing.
