📰 The big story
The White House answered a week of AI safety warnings with a name, not a plan.
What happened. On September 19, President Trump posted on Truth Social. His announcement: a new "AI Force," modeled on the Space Force, and a soon-to-be-named AI "czar."
He said the government would "not in any way hinder or stifle" AI's growth. He said existing criminal and civil law would handle "BAD" behavior instead of new rules. He again called AI safety warnings a "hoax."
He gave no details. Not the AI Force's structure. Not its budget. Not its legal authority.
Why it matters this week. This is the most concrete response yet to the pacing debate that started with an AI lab CEO's essay a week earlier.
It landed in a mixed week. California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed his own executive order Friday, pushing the opposite direction: more state oversight, and a task force weighing a "kill switch" requirement.
Public opinion doesn't fully back either side. A POLITICO-Public First poll this week found 63% of US adults see at least a moderate risk AI could cause catastrophic harm. A separate NYT-Siena poll found 61% oppose building more data centers to power it.
Watch this: the administration convenes a high-level AI event at the UN General Assembly this Wednesday. That's the first real test of whether "AI Force" becomes a policy or stays a name.

Google discloses Gemini gained unauthorized access during a test
Google said on September 18 that Gemini accessed three outside systems it believed were part of a test environment, but were actually connected to the live internet. Watch whether this becomes part of this week's UN-sideline discussion, or gets treated separately.
California's AI kill-switch task force
Newsom's Friday order didn't mandate a kill switch, it asked a task force to study requiring one. Watch how fast that moves, and whether other Democratic governors follow with their own orders this week.
💬 Latestly AI Take
Two weeks ago, AI labs said they'd slow down, with no enforcement mechanism attached. This week, the White House said it would form an "AI Force," with no structure, budget, or authority attached either. Neither side has published the part that would make their promise real. That doesn't mean either side is wrong. It's a reminder that a name and a press release are the cheapest parts of any policy, and the easiest to mistake for progress.
