📰 The big story
The world's two AI superpowers agreed to talk to each other when something goes wrong. They didn't agree to slow down first.
What happened: Presidents Trump and Xi met in Washington for three days, ending Friday. Both governments confirmed Saturday: a new communication channel for AI-related incidents.
A first AI-specific dialogue is scheduled for November. The two sides also agreed to keep working through a Board of Trade, extend their trade truce by two months, and pursue tariff cuts on $30 billion in goods.
Why it matters this week: Trump was direct about the limits. He said the US would not share everything with China, and that Washington "is not going to be putting on brakes" on its own AI development.
Analysts called the summit's steps "noteworthy," but not a breakthrough. No new rule limits what either country builds. The only new thing is a line of communication for after something happens.
Watch this: whether any real structure gets attached to the new channel before the two countries meet again in November, at APEC in Shenzhen and later at the G20 in Florida. Right now, it's a name and a date, not a working process.
