This week, one AI company became worth more than almost every bank on earth.

Another hired the world's most beloved AI teacher.

On Tuesday, Anthropic โ€” the company behind the Claude AI you may already use โ€” confirmed it had raised $30 billion in new funding. That round values the company at over $900 billion, making it the most valuable private startup in history, surpassing even OpenAI. To put that in perspective: $900 billion is more than the entire GDP of the Netherlands, Poland, and Nigeria combined. It is not a tech valuation anymore. It is a national-scale economic event.

The same week, Anthropic hired Andrej Karpathy โ€” one of the original founders of OpenAI, former head of AI at Tesla, and the most widely followed AI educator in the world, with millions of students who have learned from his free online courses. His message when he announced the move was simple: "I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative."

The window is open โ€” but it will not stay open forever

Every gold rush has a phase when the early movers do extraordinarily well, followed by a phase when the market gets crowded and margins compress. The internet had this pattern. So did mobile apps. So did social media. AI is currently in the early phase โ€” which means the skills you build today, the audiences you grow today, and the products you launch today will be worth far more than the same efforts made two years from now.

The question most people ask is: "Where do I start?" It is the right question. And it is exactly the one we built something to answer.

Who is Andrej Karpathy?

If you have ever watched a YouTube tutorial on how neural networks work, there is a good chance it was his. Karpathy co-founded OpenAI in 2015, ran Tesla's self-driving AI team, then left to build free AI education tools used by millions of people globally. He is the rare person in frontier AI who genuinely cares about teaching ordinary people. His joining Anthropic is a signal that the company wants to be the lab that brings serious AI to the widest possible audience โ€” not just enterprise customers.

What a $900 billion valuation actually means for you

Numbers this large stop feeling real very quickly. So let us translate this into something concrete.

When investors put $30 billion into a single company in one week, they are not betting on a product. They are betting on an era. They believe that AI is going to restructure how work gets done โ€” in offices, in hospitals, in logistics centres, in classrooms, in small businesses โ€” across every country on earth. That is a bet that the demand for AI skills, AI tools, and AI-adjacent services is going to grow for years, not months.

History shows what happens in moments like this. When the internet arrived, the people who got rich first were not the ones who built the infrastructure. They were the ones who understood the new tools early, built audiences, created useful things, and positioned themselves before everyone else caught up. Bloggers before journalists. E-commerce stores before retailers. YouTube channels before TV networks.

We are at that exact moment with AI. The infrastructure โ€” Claude, GPT, Gemini โ€” already exists. What does not yet exist, in most countries and most industries, is the layer of useful, local, specific products built on top of it. That gap is where the opportunity sits.

Three things the smart money is actually betting on

The $242 billion invested in AI in the first quarter of this year is not going to one thing. It is spreading across a stack โ€” and understanding that stack tells you where the real opportunities for individuals are hiding.

Where the money is flowing โ€” and what it means for you

01Frontier models (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google). This is where the billions go โ€” building the underlying AI. You cannot compete here. But you do not need to. These companies want you to build on top of their tools. Every dollar they raise makes the tools better and cheaper for everyone else.

02Vertical AI โ€” tools built for specific industries. Legal AI, healthcare AI, logistics AI, finance AI. These are the companies raising $100Mโ€“$500M rounds right now. The pattern is always the same: take a general AI model, add deep industry knowledge, and sell it to people with a specific problem. This is exactly the playbook an individual can run โ€” at a smaller scale, in a local market, with local context that no Silicon Valley startup has.

03AI-native content and communities. Newsletters, YouTube channels, Discord communities, prompt libraries, template packs โ€” anything that helps people understand and use AI in their specific context. This is the lowest barrier to entry, the fastest to monetise, and the most globally accessible. A well-run AI newsletter for Filipino freelancers or Nigerian small business owners is genuinely underserved. The tools to build it cost almost nothing. The AI to run it is already available.

Karpathy's parting message before joining Anthropic was this: the next few years will be "especially formative." He has spent the last decade teaching people how AI works. His bet, now, is that the people who understand it deeply โ€” and act on that understanding โ€” will be the ones who shape what comes next.

You do not need a Stanford PhD to be one of them. You need a niche, a plan, and a reason to start this week rather than next month. โ–

Anthropic just became the world's most valuable private AI startup โ€” worth more than most countries' economies

Bloomberg / Build Fast With AI ยท May 27, 2026 ยท The $30 billion round closed this week, led by Sequoia, Dragoneer, Altimeter, and Greenoaks, with Microsoft and Nvidia also participating. Q2 2026 revenue is projected at $10.9 billion โ€” up 130% from Q1 โ€” and the company posted its first quarterly operating profit of $559 million. It also just signed a $45 billion compute contract with SpaceX.

Meta secretly trained its AI on employees' emails and chats โ€” then laid off 8,000 of them the same day the recording leaked

Weekly AI News ยท May 27, 2026 ยท A leaked audio recording from a Meta all-hands meeting revealed Zuckerberg describing a programme that tracked employee activity across Gmail, Google Chat, and an internal assistant to train Meta's AI models. The recording surfaced on May 19 โ€” the same day 8,000 employees received layoff notices. A bruising week for Meta's internal culture.

OpenAI's AI model autonomously completed a complex multi-day coding task without any human input

Weekly AI News ยท May 27, 2026 ยท OpenAI reported that one of its models completed an extended autonomous coding task โ€” working independently over multiple days. A quiet milestone that signals the shift from AI as assistant to AI as colleague is further along than most people realise.

AI creativity now beats the average human โ€” a study of 100,000 people just confirmed it

Build Fast With AI ยท May 27, 2026 ยท A new study testing generative AI against more than 100,000 people found that AI now outperforms the average human on standard creativity benchmarks. The finding does not mean AI is "more creative" โ€” but it does mean that creativity alone is no longer a competitive advantage. Combining creativity with domain knowledge and local context is.

Microsoft Copilot agents can now use your computer exactly like a human โ€” clicking, typing, navigating screens

Radical Data Science ยท May 26, 2026 ยท Microsoft's computer-using agents in Copilot Studio are now generally available. They navigate interfaces, fill forms, and operate software without API integration โ€” meaning they can automate almost any task a human can do on a screen. For small businesses that rely on legacy software, this is a bigger deal than any chatbot.

China is restricting AI researchers from travelling abroad โ€” the talent war just turned into a border policy

Build Fast With AI ยท May 27, 2026 ยท China's travel restrictions on AI researchers are widening, with new controls limiting movement of researchers working on frontier models. A signal of how seriously Beijing views AI capability as a strategic national asset โ€” and how much the global AI talent market is fracturing along geopolitical lines.

Google AI Studio is coming to your phone โ€” you will soon be able to build AI apps from anywhere

Radical Data Science ยท May 26, 2026 ยท Google announced AI Studio โ€” its tool for building AI-powered apps by describing what you want โ€” is coming to mobile as a standalone app. For people in markets where a laptop is a luxury but a smartphone is not, this lowers the barrier to building AI products significantly.
